Startup Braga brings innovative biotech projects to Economy Weeks

The third week of initiatives in the Braga 2025 Economy Weeks kicked off this Tuesday, highlighting the city's role in technological innovation and cross-border co-operation in biotechnology. Startup Braga was accompanied by five projects that proved the best of what is being done in the region.

Forum Braga hosted the conference ‘Biotechnology in Action - The IBEROBIO Project as a Platform for Change’, organised in partnership with Colab4Food, the University of Minho, the Centre for Biological Engineering and P-BIO. The event brought together academics, startups - namely ablute, IPLEXMED, Fetalix, Ooze Nanotech and OmniumAI - companies and investors - from Bynd Capital, Invicta Angels and Portugal Ventures, in a forum for debate and presentation of innovative biotechnological solutions with applications in the areas of health, agri-food, the environment and bioinformatics.

The programme included panels on the challenges of the bioeconomy in the context of the Northern Portugal Smart Specialisation Strategy, presentations of ongoing projects and a panel on the role of Artificial Intelligence in biotechnology, as well as a matchmaking session that promoted direct contact between entities from the scientific and business ecosystem. The event also featured an exhibition of solutions and research projects in the field of biotechnology, aimed above all at postgraduate students, entrepreneurs, SMEs, startups and investors in the sector.

For Luís Rodrigues, director of Startup Braga, the event was an excellent opportunity to emphasise that ‘in a sector undergoing major transformation, which faces great challenges but offers great opportunities, contributing billions of euros to the European Union's overall GDP. Braga is establishing itself as one of the most dynamic centres of innovation in biotechnology in Portugal. This event shows the value of networked knowledge and the benefits of international co-operation.’
